Description: Click to see full description Software development has to be one of the more frustrating jobs in the world, primarily because developers spend a great deal of time analyzing why things that should work do not work. Often times a bug in the application itself prevents a property or method from functioning properly or even at all. The more routine the application, the less likely the developer is to run into problems as most of the bugs will already have been discovered and either fixed or have had some kind of work around readily published and available for use. Sadly, when someone tries to take on the task of doing something radically different that might yield a real time savings and competitive advantage, they can often run into a problem not of their own doing because they are in essence operating “off the grid” and in untested water. In such instances the developer is in effect doing the beta testing for the more sophisticated processes in the product. The really frustrating thing for a developer is that when they find such a bug or oversight in a product that is readily repeatable, but it falls within the space of a product that is seldom utilized, the software company will usually not be willing to fix it. The reason for this is understandable in that often times when software is fixed, something somewhere else in the application gets broken as a result of the fix. Why take a chance on fixing a rarely used functionality if it might end up compromising a more widely utilized area of the application? Further, if such a small percentage of the user base utilizes this area of the application, why bother to invest resources to fix it when they could be enhancing the areas of the application utilized by the masses. For an MBA, this school of thought would seem reasonable but in reality it is extremely self-limiting.
