Following this introduction putting the subject in context, the book starts with some basic guidelines for enhancing the resilience of buildings to blast loading (Chapter 2). An explanation of the nature of explosions and the mechanism of blast waves in free air is then given. This leads to a discussion of the loading that explosions place on structures, both inside and out, and the concept of an idealized loading is introduced (Chapter 3). The response of buildings, people and equipment to blast loading is illustrated.
